The state government may permit digging of borewells in the villages for drinking water purposes if required, based on the report from the revenue authorities. The panchayat raj department also said no sand mining is permitted in these villages.

“The state government has banned digging of borewells in 1,057 villages in 42 mandals based on a previous report (2001-11) on the groundwater situation in the state. Another 100 to 200 villages will be added in the next few days to the list as the latest report (2012-13) was also accepted by the government following which more number of mandals will be added,“ K Dhananjaya, director, groundwater department told TOI on Monday.
